(the view at a restaurant two blocks from my house the day before the 2012 Iowa Caucus)
The question on the street right now is: Why does Iowa get to have the "first in the nation" status with the Iowa Caucuses? (for my friends reading this outside of the U.S.--google 'Iowa Caucuses' for a brief description of the craziness that is happening here right now).
My answer? Why not Iowa? Seriously.
This is actually a pretty cool place to live. On the whole, we're pretty open minded (yes, there are glaring exceptions--but there are glaring exceptions everywhere). We are amazingly nice, too. Sometimes surprisingly so--we really do say "thank you" and "excuse me" and we mean it when we ask "how are you?" Why wouldn't you want to have a caucus with open minded, smart people? And besides, we're first in the nation in things beside politics, too: same-sex marriage, for example (OK, not the first...but right up there).
